In Bloom

Every so often you come upon an artist whose work brings a smile to your face.  Sometimes it's because it's humorous and other times it's just beautiful.  A sense of beauty carries a lot of weight in this world.  We don't talk about it often because we're often looking for the innovation.  I personally am attracted to maturity in an artist's work.

I've seen various exhibitions by Jean Smith and went to hear her speak at CORE New Art Space when they celebrated their big anniversary last year.  I really like her flower pieces because of the color and how much life they bring forth.  I attended her recent showing at Zip 37 Gallery and was thrilled with the exhibit.

For me, personally, the present collection of work Jean is presenting is the best I've seen from her in the past few years.  There's a maturity to the work in its execution.  There is a confidence in the pieces that is very present when you stand amongst a grouping.  There is more definition to the work expressing a more intimate relationship Jean has with her materials.  It definitely shows in the outcome of the pieces.

I was thrilled to be at the opening and to see her interact with collectors.  She's helpful, joyful and very attune to the collectors needs and wants.  She dialogued with her collectors about the changes she's made in her work and the effects she's working to achieve.  I can see why collectors enjoy her work, because she's so connected to it and if you meet her you can't help but be attracted to her.

I commend her for her ongoing devotion to her art.  It's a testimonial to what happens when we as artists stick with something, working toward mastery.

Engaged in her growth...
