When You've Got It...You've Got It!
We all know that being an artrepreneur means including the business side of things to the equation. Kelly Payton has reached new heights with her show "Motherless Child Series" at Now ArtSpace, (http://64.234.201.78/now/).
I've had numerous opportunities to spend time with Kelly over the past couple of years and to see how blossom is exhilarating. Unless you're selling work for very high dollars, making an income from gallery representation becomes difficult. If you're going to sell your own work, even if you show in gallery spaces, you should know something about business, in addition to showing great art.
The series of paintings are lively and colorful. Every piece in the show is named, you know that's a pet peeve of mine having anonymous work. It's like not naming a child or a pet, would you really do that? The title of the work makes you think and encourages you to ask questions of the artist. Fortunately it was opening night and she was standing next to me...I could ask all the questions I wanted.
Some key points that I think make this opening stand head and shoulders above most I've been to in the last year. When I asked Kelly a question about a particular painting, her immediate response was..."Do you want to know the story behind the painting". I'm a sucker for a good story and the fact that she offered, allowed me to connect with her and her work more deeply. She was a gracious hostess. She encouraged visitors to the gallery to go through the gallery and then she'd check with them to see if they had questions. She definitely had support from family and friends, but she got to meet lots of new people, sharing her gift with them.
I wanted to know about her inspiration and she was quick to the draw with what inspired the series. She is so connected to the work that she didn't have to think about it or try and come up with something, it was organic and therefore believable. You trust her when she tells you the story. You are given a glimpse into her world and that's a privilege.
The show runs until Saturday, April 26th. The gallery is located at 3977 Tennyson Street in Denver.
Don't miss it or any opportunity to hear Kelly talk about the series.
Oh So Proud!
