Check Out That Body
There are certain shows that catch your attention because there is something that makes them stand out from all the others. The Colorado Clay show at the Foothills Art Center is one of those shows. It's not the subject matter or the medium. The unique aspect of this show is the selection of the artists in the show. Richard Notkin, the juror for this show selected the artists but not the actual works that would be exhibited in the show. There is a real risk when you jury on the artist ability and not the pieces, but faith allows us to take that leap.
In this particular show there were sixty-one artists considered and twelve were chosen. The other unique part of this show is that with few artists showing, they were all asked to bring in a number of pieces...not just one. It really allows us to see a body of work by an artist. If you're emerging this is a great show to see because you'll get to actually see the personification of "continuity". The pieces the artists brought in are similar to one another creating cohesion and a furthering of the artist's story.
If you're an accomplished artist this show reinforces the foundation principles of showing our work because of the cohesion factor. It punctuates the impact a cohesive body of work can have on the viewer. When you're able to make that cohesive statement your viewers, buyers, collectors enter your world. How persuasive you are in your cohesion is up to you.
It's definitely a show worth seeing. It's creative, fun, even quirky and that's worth the trip.
