Invitations
IF YOU DON'T WANT ME THERE...DON'T INVITE ME!
Yes that's right, I'm yelling. I'm on lots of mailing lists. You asked me for my contact information either electronic or snail mail and I've given it to you. You've sent me invitations and you know what I'm finding. I'm finding that many of you are so caught up in the limelight of having a show that you forget you're the host and I'm the guest.
I AM THE GUEST!!!!
If you are so caught up in the rapture of having a show save us all a lot of trouble and don't send out invitations. Don't send out invitations/postcards because you think it's the right thing to do unless you're willing to be a host. I have walked in to lots of recent exhibits where the artist is tucked away in a back room talking to friends or is in the gallery surrounded by their "entourage" and are so insulated that it's tougher getting to them than into Fort Knox.
If you aren't up to hosting than have a small reception for family and friends and leave it at that. I don't mind not being invited, but I don't want to be ignored, after all I usually have a check in my pocket for that purchase that will add to my collection. Maybe you don't know any better, that's why I'm telling you. Maybe you're not really serious about selling your work, that's fine, but don't leave those who have graciously shown up hanging in the breeze.
Take a personal inventory about how gracious you are as a host. I've been kind up till now not mentioning any names, but I'm tired so that nice streak is over. If you're a lousy host I feel compelled to let the whole world know about it. I hope this serves as a wake-up call for those of you serious about selling. If you don't really care, than enjoy your amateur status and don't drag my ass out in the cold to be experience the cold in the gallery.
Tired of being ignored...
