Creative Shift
Dare to be different. Whenever I hear that statement I assume that it is reference to you as an artist versus the rest of the world. What happens when you the artist dare to be different from your previous work? Have you exhausted what you're known for or are you bored? Are you being tickled by inspiration or tortured by desperation? These are all important decisions and believe me if it's the desperation, it comes through in quality of the work.
Fortunately, Danyl Cook who has been known for his whimsical houses is obviously being tickled by curiosity. His current work at Zip 37 is very different from his previous work. It's whimsy, meets seduction, meets glam, meets provocateur.
What I found interesting about the exhibit is that the new work is on one wall and the work we'd expect is on the opposite wall. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a before and after, or just the Sybil side of every artist. This is one of those times where if you didn't know that Danyl was working on two series you'd think that the gallery is exhibiting two artists. I don't recall seeing any signage about who was exhibiting.
I like the new work because it has a vintage, kitsch feel to it while maintaining the story. It definitely shows his affinity for the pin up culture and a more comic, modernized stereotype of the heroine role.
