Time Travel

Believe it or not there really were easier times in our history, at least our perception of history.  They say the further you get away from the pain the more faint the memory of the pain becomes.  However, when we diminish the pain we're more inclined to think it wasn't so bad, and we repeat our mistakes.  This has nothing to do with Freud's repetition compulsion...at least not entirely.

When an artist creates work that is not only artistic, but socially and culturally relevant a new dimension is added to the work.  It gives the viewer a chance to reminisce and then out of nowhere is a jolt of reality.  Such is the case with Mark Penner-Howell's show "Destinesia".  It takes the sensibility of an earlier time, the 40's and 50's, the Pleasantville era, and pairs it with the harsh reality of today.

Let's be clear, throughout our history (USA), we've been involved in various conflicts.  It's not as if we've been devoid of conflict, but the pairing of what some may believe to be simpler times with the in-your-face reality of our current state of affairs gets people talking.

I was particularly drawn to the piece, "Impulse".  I like the visual overlay and the geometry of the piece.  Mark's painting skill is clearly demonstrated.  His ability to capture that Dick and Jane experience permeates the show.  It would be a great exhibit to go through with those who grew up in those earlier times and get their recollections while living in the current circumstance.

Cheers to days gone by and happier times ahead...
