Melding of Art and Process
I really enjoy seeing art in mediums that I don't know a lot about of practice. That's why the exhibit by Garvin was so refreshing. I know little about encaustic work but I'm always intrigued by it. I love the idea of layers and I've been told that's key in the encaustic process.
An exhibit, is an exhibit, is an exhibit, so what makes this particular exhibit unique. When I walked in I noticed that there was an altar and incense burning. Along side the altar was an opportunity for viewers to write affirmations or prayers adding to the atmosphere. It might not make sense if you looked at the art and walked out without reading Garvin's artist statement, then everything unfolds.
The line in the artist statement that jumped out at me was "the art is the process". This artist is certainly playing in my league. Experiencing the magic of the process and being cognizant of it is amazing. I know lots of artists can tell you how they got from point A to point B, but to delve deep and understand your process and how the work emerges from that knowledge is inspiring.
My favorite piece in the show was "Planetoral Artery II". It made me think of a fossilized impression of the earth, but with vibrant color. The encaustic process is like creating an archaeological dig and if you make those design judgments based on process the outcome is inviting and soulful.
Keeping the connection...
