Blank Slate

It's not a surprise that at this time of year many take a moment to reflect upon their accomplishments and unfortunately wind up focusing on their faults or missed goals.  How does one bad apple spoil the whole bunch? (Maybe we should ask the Osmond Brothers)  For now I'll think about what this time of year sparks in me and I hope that it will spark something of equal enormity for you.

Instead of reflecting on things I wanted to accomplish or work I wanted to complete I tend to reflect on the people I met in the previous year.  I've found that when I find my people, better known as my tribe, that I can leap tall buildings in a single bound and not even break a sweat.  I think it's hard for many of us to find our tribe because we are often saddled with the idea that others are our competition or we use someone else's life as a measuring stick for our own.

The conclusion I came to in 2007 was that it's more important to be with "people who are what I am" instead of being around "People who do what I do".  There are always professional organizations and guilds and I am a firm believer in them, in fact I think they are essential for growth, but that doesn't mean those are the people who are or should be in your inner circle.  Just because someone engages in the same activity (making art) doesn't mean they hold the same values, or hold to the same personal business standards (ethical business) or even want the same things from creating art that I want.

As you move forward in the year I hope the people who share the things that are most important to living a good life.  People who believe in the same things you believe in and walk their talk.  Don't worry about resolutions, we all know that most people abandon their resolutions in the first eight days, or maybe it's eight minutes.

Focus on creating a tribe that will support you in all your endeavors, both personal and professional.  I believe that will impact your art more than any class ever will, and results will show up in your relationships with others and how you feel about yourself and that will make you more attractive to buyers/collectors/gallery directors.

To having it all...
