P is for Prodigy
What comes to mind when you hear the word prodigy? I always conjure up a vision of a six year old child sitting at a piano playing one of the most intense classical works ever written. Although there are prodigies in every creative arena we are most likely to hear about the young musicians and if you speak with them they are overcome with responsibility to live up to the title.
Many of the artists I've worked with over the past five years are second career artists. Although they may have begun their artistic endeavors at a very young age it wasn't nurtured, protected, encouraged and promoted the way the young musicians are mentored. Why do you think that is? Some would say that in music it's the technical along with the performance that makes a winning combination. In the visual arts world how are young prodigies mentored?
I wonder if we can become a prodigy later in life. If our work has been dormant for many years and there is a moment or a flash or realization about living the life of an artist can we become a prodigy at any age. The self-improvement section tells us all that we have an inner child, so can't that inner child enter the world and be a breakout artist? What would it take for you to become a modern day, adult prodigy? How will you make it happen?
