Artist Know Thyself!

The world is filled with causes.  I get calls at least three times a week asking me for some type of donation whether it be time, clothes, money or art.  Having worked in the nonprofit world for twenty years I'm very aware of the challenges faced by nonprofits to raise funds to keep their agencies afloat.  I also understand that following the events of 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina the American public is feeling squeezed.  So what does this have to do with art?  I'm glad you asked.

We all have things that are near and dear to our hearts.  Our lives have provided us with a multitude of experiences that make us the people we are today.  It's the personal experience that can set you apart as an artist.  What's your personal experience and are you willing to share it with the world.  I'm involved in an art and healing project that has punctuated how art can heal the mind, body and spirit.

Why this question and why now?  At a recent artist talk the artist was asked if their art is a commentary on anything in particular.  His response was "I'm looking for a good cause to stand up for."  I found that shocking because it's not like he has to go out and seek, all he needs to do is go inside and find.  Some may call it inspiration coming to fruition, but it's the souls need to have a voice that brings that connection between life experience and art.  If your concerns aren't in your art then how do we fulfill our role as social anthropologists.

Are you ready to stand up and be counted?

Knowing what I stand for!
