Common Subject, New Perspective

There are certain topics or subjects that are the focus of a lot of art.  Often it dates back hundreds if not thousands of years and yet we're still attracted to the image or the symbolism of the image.  When we take on these types of iconographic images it's all about the interpretation.  One of the most recognizable icons in the spiritual world is that of Buddha.

I ventured in the gallery Art and Design.  I love the space, even contemplated how I could buy the space when it was for sale (that's just an aside).  What I saw was a display of art pieces with Buddha as the subject.  There was something about the images that I was drawn to as I walked through the gallery.  The artist, Shawndell Miller creates these works with acrylic paints.  I found two of her pieces captivating, "Meditation Thailand" and "Humility Thailand".  I've always had an affinity for Asian Culture, but having an intimate knowledge of the Buddhist community when I lived in the Bay Area, these images captured the calm I always associate with a Buddha.

What I was intrigued by in Shawndell's painting was her ability to capture the patina that would naturally occur on a bronze Buddha with years of facing the elements.  Her use of color captured the essence of the Buddha's battle with the elements, that's a gift to have that knowledge of color.  I look forward to seeing how she carries this talent and use of color forward.

In a serene state...
