Childlike Abandon

At a recent artist talk there was a particular part of the evening that made me sit up and pay attention.  The host of the evening had invited two people who played with Hula Hoops.  They were definitely having a good time and following the demonstration they gave everyone a recipe on how to make your own Hula Hoop.

It has been a very long time since my Hula Hoop days but to see the joy in their faces was contagious.  I couldn't help but smile a big happy smile.  The other fun part in creating your own Hula Hoop is the opportunity to decorate it any way you desire.  There are great metallic tapes and other glitz to customize your Hula Hoop.  I think it's one way to be artistic without the pressure of a serious outcome.  The only person who has to love it is you.

It's times like these that I hope you don't abandon that childlike sensibility.  Remembering back to more carefree days will give you latitude as you create the art that is meant to emerge from your soul.   It's this bit of levity that keeps you in the frame of mind to create as self-expression instead of having to fit into what some may call the prescription for success.  Having an open mind and being open to new experiences will serve you the same way a yoga class or meditation will have in connecting you to a deeper part of you.

Don't lose the spark of the child that wants to play, it could and is often a real life saver to your creative process.

Keeping it young...
