In the Presence of Experts
The curator for the Clyfford Still museum was the juror for this year's All Colorado Show at the Curtis Center. One of the benefits of being on mailing lists is that you stay in the loop about what's happening, not only about show opportunities but opportunities to learn something new. The Curtis Center asks the juror to give a talk so I got to expand my knowledge about art history without having to pay tuition.
Clyfford Still was a part of the Abstract Expressionist movement. I hope you're all looking to see who you are an artist descendant of...it's really important to creating a cohesive body of work and working toward mastery. Dean Sobel, the curator of the museum, gave a talk about Abstract Expressionism with of focus on where Styll fit into the big picture (sorry for the pun).
Becoming knowledgeable about art is just as important as becoming a master of technique. I've told stories throughout my years working with artists about having knowledge about an artist or era in and art and attracting a crowd who wanted to know more. It's a great ice breaker at events and allows you to stand in the spotlight of being an expert. It makes it that much easier to begin talking about your own art and having business cards to give those who might be interested.
Dean was so informative that I was sorry that the talk was only an hour...but it gives me an incentive to study more about Abstract Expressionism and become a true part of the artist culture by knowing the lingo, the players both past and present and having the skills to talk about my own art.
Staying at the head of the class...
