Leveraging
I'm a big fan of artist guilds, organizations, associations, whatever you want to call them in your medium or neck of the woods. I believe they create community and I have experienced over and over the enormous opportunities that arise by being exposed to others on a regular basis who create art. Front Range Contemporary Quilters (FRCQ) has general membership meetings on the odd numbered months and what we call newcomer meetings on the even numbered months. We bring nationally recognized speakers for the general membership meetings and we invite local "celebrities" to speak at the newcomers meeting.
There are some people who are very unassuming but when you get them in the spotlight really surprise you. This week Marie Castle Wing presented on her technique in textile art. She was very modest about her success and yet throughout her slide presentation over and over again we heard "that piece is sold". What makes Marie unique is the heavy utilization of what we in the textile world call fusing (applying a textile adhesive to the back of the fabric and when ironed bonds with the fabric where you want it to stick.) Many textile artists use this in moderation but Marie takes it to the edge both literally and figuratively.
She's become so in love with the technique that to augment her art she has created a pattern company. She's is developing multiple streams of income so that she's not always reliant on selling her work...in this case she's selling her idea. What does this do for Marie? It makes her an expert. This will lead to teaching engagements and down the road I wouldn't be surprised to see a book. She's learned to leverage her technique so that she can earn a living as a working artist without having to sell to museums or show in galleries.
Marie has created a well thought out business model that gives her flexibility and many opportunities. Hats off to Marie for her creativity and business sense that will take her far.
Oh the possibilities...
