Is The End Near?

Is it pessimism?  Is it realism?  Is it a warning?  Is it social commentary?  These are all the questions you'll ask yourself when you see Lenka Konopasek's show "Close and Distant Dangers".  The show is on exhibit at +Gallery (www.plusgallery.com  look under current exhibition).  It's amazing that a woman who is pregnant is creating a show that is very doom and gloom.  Don't get me wrong, the work is amazing...just surprising.

This is one of those times that an artist talk would be very helpful to try and crawl inside her head.  Obviously the subject matter is grabbing, but it's her use of color that I found to be a key factor drawing me more into the work.  Many of the colors are grayed so it adds to the overcast feel in the work.  My personal favorites in the show were "New Orleans Flood 1" and "New Orleans Flood 3".  Don't feel bad for other catastrophes because Lenka gives them equal time.

I always say that artists play many roles in our culture and one is social scientist, journalist and activist.  These attributes come out in this show.  It's a wake-up call and my hope is that more than just the art world will get to see this work.  This is a great opportunity for someone like Al Gore to show the world not just the facts of "The Inconvenient Truth", but to show the trickle down effect the scientific community has on the world.

Impacted...
