Can't you just hear Aretha Franklin singing in your head at this very moment. Respect is one of the key descriptors for the works by David H. Davis and Carmen Hunter. The two are exhibiting a photography show titled "Visions of the Navajo in Their Native Land". It's interesting to have the world view of the same subject matter because it gives you perspective you wouldn't otherwise obtain.
There are two works by David H. Davis that really caught my eye; "Meditating Maidens" and "My Feather, My Guide". The show overall is artistically exquisite. There are both black and white and color images. I stood before each piece for some time taking in the messages and the stories being told in the faces of the subjects.
This show is out of the ordinary because it takes a group of people and presents them in a kind, respectful and honoring fashion. It's not about exploitation or subjecting them to stereotypes. The photographs allow you to enter the Navajo culture without having to travel to the reservation. It provides you with the values of the Navajo like the interaction between children and their elders. It focuses on the importance of family.
It's too easy to want to show the political and economic lives of these people but this show tells the emotional and spiritual side of the Navajo.
In awe...
