Women of Steel
Okay so maybe it's not steel, but aluminum. I didn't think "Women of Aluminum" sounded as sexy. One of the artists at the Pavilions last weekend was Kristin DeSantis (www.KristinDeSantis.com) a metal worker with extraordinary talents.
One of the things I've found that creates success for an artist is how they stand out from the pack. Seeing Kristin's metal work is one example of how she stands out. I guarantee you that every interview or dialogue with a collector begins with "How did you begin working with metal?" I know this from personal experience. As a textile artist people are always amazed that I can actually sew. It's like we're the creatures people go to see at the zoo and watch in their natural habitats to see if the myths are true.
When we do something out of context, or across gender roles, we create buzz. It's interesting to see how interested people become in your work when in Kristin's case she may be working with a blow torch or other big tools. It adds a layer of interest to the art. I'm not saying that everyone should abandon their work for something that is contrary to their gender expected medium, but I can say it is one way that we stand out and make our presence known in the art world.
Still sticking out...

Wow,
Thank you for that link. I am in awe of those works- makes me want to run to home depot and get torching! I appreciate your links to artists and your willingness to open me up to works I may not have seen!
