Connecting Visual Art and Performance Art

The first Monday art talk I attend had a twist this month.  Instead of the guest being someone who is a visual artist, the guest, Chris Lawhead, is a performance artist.  Chris is a musician with many specialties and you can tell that he is having a love affair with his music.  After years of working the jazz music arena he has moved into a more rock 'n roll genre and he's having a great time.

Listening to Chris talk about his journey the thing that caught my attention most was that when someone asked him if he could do something he always said yes.  Obviously this only works if you have talent as Chris does, he plays a lot of instruments and was trained with a traditional music education.  In addition, he has the confidence to take on the project and make it work.  He understands that as an entrepreneur multiple streams of income serve him as a means to earning his entire living related to music.

This interview got me thinking about how visual artists can interpret things like rhythm.  Is there a translation factor.  Can we experience a beat with 2-D art?  They say you can experience color through music so is the reverse true?  It would be an interesting experiment to create work in response to the music and see if the translation is possible.

When asked what his 5 year plan is he said "I intend to do the same thing I'm doing now only on a bigger scale".  I felt he has a firm group on his vision and the goals that he's setting to achieve the outcome he desires.  It was a treat to hear him both musically and in the dialogue.  I often find that artists can't articulate their thoughts but Chris sailed through like a pro.

Feeling the beat...
