Why do artists send mixed messages?

I have been a member of the Colorado Jewish Artist Guild for the past year.  Over and over the artists discuss how to get their work out into the world and try and come up with a plan to expand their market.  I offered to present a two session workshop on marketing and developing an art business at less than half the rate that I would normally charge.  It seemed like a perfect match...but more would be revealed.

At the most recent meeting the artists asked our guest about pricing, working with galleries and his path to success.  You would think that they were asking because they are trying to figure this out for themselves.  Once again we made a pitch for the workshop.

We had to cancel the workshop due to insufficient registration.  Why do artists say they want one thing and then don't follow up?  Why do artists complain that they aren't' making money and when you give them a path of development they refuse the offer?  Why do artists believe that divine intervention will save them from themselves?

Baffled...
