One Theme...Endless Possibilities
Is it possible to spend your entire art career focused on one theme? Is it possible to explore one theme in a multitude of ways that keeps you focused and fresh at the same time? Are we capable of going deep into the depths of our psyche to continue flushing out the effects of our earlier lives?
The answer based on the lecture and slide show of Emilio Laboto is....YES! I don't believe that I have met an artist over the past four years that has been so focused on his inspiration. During his talk Emilio referenced the themes of "isolation and solitude" at least six times. It was not only a theme in his work but you can tell by meeting him how his earlier days impacted his world view and how he's been working to share that world view and overcome what some may have believed were its limitations.
Did you ever play the word game as a kid where you took a large word (one with many letters) and then had to make as many smaller words from the big word? That's what Emilio's work reminded me of in a simpler form. He's taken the one theme and has worked to pull bits and pieces of the experience to share over the past twenty-five years. It's amazing because his energy behind this theme is strong and vibrant. I don't believe that he is using up what some might believe are his psyche's fossil fuels. There seems to be plenty of untapped resources waiting for him to explore.
