Praise...Friend or Foe

I was watching a segment on Good Morning America (GMA) and they were looking at the ramifications of praise in children.  The study looked at fifth graders and their response and internalization of the praise they received from their parents.  The outcomes were surprising because they found some students did not achieve to their potential as a result of praise and others thrived.  What was the difference?

The difference came in what the children were praised for...those who were praised for being smart were not as successful as those who were praised for working hard.  Those who were praised for being smart felt less of a need to increase their efforts when tasks became more difficult.  The students who succeeded were those who were praised for hard work and that by praising the kids for increased effort the kids displayed increased effort even as tasks became very difficult.

Let's look at this in the art world...how many of you have been told that you are talented.  Is that really enough?  How many works of art are you selling?  Those who are praised for their tenacity will be spurred on to greatness.  I hope you'll take this study seriously.  Don't rest on people's praise for being talented or making beautiful art, encourage those around you to praise you for your determination, growth and continued effort to becoming a successful artist, an artprepreneur.
