Spring is Just Around the Corner...I Hope!
The Rocky Mountains have been hit this year with a lot of snow. Upstate New York has been bombarded by the white stuff and unfortunately more is in store due to lake effect snow. It's for these reasons and the realization that there is just so much white any one human can look at for a prolonged period of time that the show at the Sandy Carson Gallery is a breath of fresh air. Winter Garden is a show of floral paintings that bring civility back into the lives of those who have endured the starkness of the snow.
Mary Warner's paintings "Little Opera" and "Study in Red" not only bring about the relief from the blank canvas provided by the snow, but it gives us a depth in work that is amazing. The meticulous nature in the creation of her flowers is inspiring. Each petal is carefully constructed giving the painting visual layers. The petals looked like if a wind blew by that they would wave with the wind. They had a familiarity to underwater sea life that sways with the current.
Consider the shows you join or curate...how will they be received by the public? What impact are you hoping to make? In this instance the only thing Sandy Carson could count on was winter so a spring theme is a vision of hope. She couldn't predict the mounds of white that kept us blinded to any hope that nature would ever be heard from again. I know through observation that many people entered the gallery not because they were such floral fanatics, but their comments were related to the encouragement and hope that the snow would soon disappear. It was like an oasis in the desert.
Thanks for the break...
