Soaring to New Heights

I'm not one for installations because for the most part I never understand them.  I walked into Translations Gallery and in the middle of the room was an installation piece hanging from the ceiling.  I know Judy Hagler the owner and called to her that this piece is "FABULOUS", and that's a word I reserve for emphasis.  Jennifer Ghormley's "Fresh"draws you like a magnet to explore the piece from all angles.

When I saw the piece which is pieces of fabric folded/stitched and hanging from thread of a matching color if you saw one it wouldn't be anything to look at but having a sea of them is impressive.  The idea of hanging each of those pieces individually is daunting even though the end result is spectacular.  It looks like a river flowing through the air.  The ability to achieve that as an artist is awe inspiring.

As I moved through the gallery I noticed some other attention grabbing pieces.  They are weavings by a Peruvian artist, Maximo Laura.  The weavings are dimensional and in vibrant colors.  They are made from angora so the hand of the piece is sumptuous.  "Canto a la Terra" has a very ethnic feel adding to the mystery of the piece unless you know a lot about Peruvian culture.  He'll be having a show in June so keep your eyes peeled for more information.

Soaring...
