Roots of Inspiration
I was at a lecture this week given by Dr. George Rivera, an art history professor at CU Boulder. He emphasized many times the importance of an artists history and biography. These are the core components of what makes an artists work connect deeply with an audience. It provides us with a glimpse of the artists inner world.
The equation that include biography and history is augmented when we add the artists social context into the equation. What is it that the artist thinks about? What has the artist identified as the core principles and values that influence their work?
This couldn't be brought to the foreground any clearer then seeing the exhibit at Camera Obscura of photographer Claire Yaffa. Yaffa is internationally known for photographing society's disadvantaged. She punctuates the idea that the ordinary can and is extraordinary. When you see Yaffa's work you ask yourself "how did I miss that?" and "now I can see what I didn't see or want to see before."
The show is incredible and Yaffa's work is the perfect melding of fine art, social activism and spiritual awakening.
Thank you for opening our eyes...
