The Impact of Working Together

There is an old African proverb, "If you want to go fast, go it alone...If you want to go far, go with others".  This is how I feel about what the RiNo district has done in their collaborative efforts to bring patrons to their art district.  It's amazing what can happen when you bring like minded individuals together with a common cause.

Unfortunately due to personal commitments I could only get out to visit some of the venues on Friday evening, but the joints were jumping.  I got to spend time at two of my favorite galleries, Ironton Gallery and Studios and Weilworks.  It's a bonus that they are directly across the street from one another...I like efficiency.

Weilworks had a variety of work but one of the most dramatic artists who I was fortunate enough to meet last year is pastel artist extraordinaire, Riva Sweetrocket.  Riva's piece "Blue" is mesmerizing.  The shades of blue in the piece are captivating.  You can see more of Riva's work at the Foothills Art Center.

Ironton has a show titled "Iron Et Cetera".  This is one of the most diverse shows I've seen at Ironton over the past 1 1/2 years.  The pieces I thought were exceptional were "LeeAnn Mitchell's "From the White Building", cast iron, bronze and oak.   In the corner there was David Lobdell's "Turtle Shell Incantation Bowls" made of cast iron.  Mike Brohman's "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let Down Thy Hair" of cast iron and wool.  The piece stands in the middle of the room and is a testament to the fairy tale.  Finally, the piece that seemed hidden away but when you found it I couldn't help but laugh was Benigno Lopez' "Solitude Without Isolation" .  I love how the curator put the piece in a partitioned area and you had to make the effort to go up and peek around the partition to see what lies beyond.

These two galleries are only a sample of the forty plus galleries/artist studios who participated in the event.  I hope that artists come to the realization that it's about collaboration, not competition that will yield them the greatest rewards.

Keep on collaborating...
Greg
