Creating an Experience

Back in November I wrote about the Latino show at The Other Side Arts and mentioned a young, talented artist named Cal Duran.  When I ventured out last week to Pirate Gallery I was pleased to see that Cal had a show in the rear gallery and I could see a many of his pieces instead of one in a group show.

The thing that impressed me most was how he created a cohesive environment to exhibit the work.  The show is very thematic in nature focusing on the theme of "Day of the Dead".  His paintings and sculpture have what some may considering haunting and I found to be thought provoking nature.

The gallery was designed as an interior designer would decorate a room.  There were dried flowers lining the walls around the room adding to the feeling Cal was trying to evoke.  His three sculptures titled "Hostage" are amazing.  They are beautiful even though the title makes us think of things we would rather forget.  I believe he creates work about ideas that many of us have but are afraid to speak about.  His ability to capture those thoughts makes it less taboo and adds to the beauty.

Thanks Cal...
Greg
