How Do You Reconcile Your Artistic Lineage?

When you look at someone's work do you ever wonder who they studied with?  Is their art so similar to another artists that the connection is unavoidable?  As an artist who studied with a prominent artist in my medium, I found it a difficult challenge to make sure that my work didn't look like hers.  I also wanted to make sure it didn't look like the work of others who studied with this artist.  If you fall into that rut then it looks like the work is the product of a class you took with an artist and everyone's work in the class is homogeneous.

This is how I felt when I went to Space Gallery and saw the work of Lewis McInnis.  I felt like I was in a very early phase of Emilio Lobato's art life.  When I saw the large works and there were quite a few, one after the other made me think more about Emilio's work instead of Lewis' work.  Obviously a big difference between the two is the price of each artist's work.

The pieces of Lewis' that I found inviting and unique were his watercolor on notebook paper.  It's original and truly had his own point of view and vision.  I would recommend that he follow up on that route instead of being what looks like an closely interpreted work of another artist.

Skeptical...
