Thrown Out Into the Real World
I attended the opening of the show for the December graduates at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. It's an exciting time for the graduates and I'm sure very scary as they leave the safe confines of their college days and about to enter the "real world". As always there's lots of frenzy at this event because friends and family all come to celebrate the accomplishments of four years of study. I believe on some level the parents come to see if they got their money's worth from the four year education.
I was surprised at a couple of things. The show was overwhelmingly interior design students and illustration/graphic design students. The work was great, I was just surprised at how lopsided the graduating class seems to be. It may be the census of the school shown on something other than a venn diagram. The students are talented and innovative.
The one thing that surprised me that I was thrilled about was that many of the students actually had business cards available. I was impressed that the students understood the business side of their work and were putting themselves out there for future endeavors. I know that both the interior design department and the illustration department offer some business words of wisdom so we'll have to see if it is true when there are fine arts majors in the exhibtion.
The show is fun and I want to wish all the graduating seniors much success in their careers.
On pins and needles for the students...
