Can Excitement and Serenity Co-Exist?
When you have a large space it can be daunting to exhibit more than one artist because you really have to consider how do the exhibiting artists balance the room. I often search out the work of an artist before I attend the opening of a show because I like to have a sense of the artist's point of view and inspiration. I didn't have a chance to do that with the current show at Walker Fine Art and I'm glad I allowed myself to be surprised. Actually it was more of allowing myself to be present with the art instead of having a preconceived notion about what the work represents.
The two artists in the spotlight are Quim Bove, whose mixed media paintings adorn the walls and Kathi Caricof who is exhibiting her incredible sculpture and mobiles. Conceptually this show is intriguing because both artists come from a very internal, spiritual, connected to energy kind of space. Their artist statements are deeply personal and give you a great foundation for the work in the gallery. The similarities in their groundedness it uncanny and yet how they express it creates a great duality in the space.
Quim's mixed media paintings are vibrant colors and have a sense of movement that captures your attention. He focused on three elements: human, universe and paint. His works takes you into a personal experience of what entering a vortex might be like. The use of resin creates an impeccably smoothe finish on the work drawing you in to see the layers of color. It's like witnessing an artistic archaeological site.
Cathi's sculpture and mobiles are more serene. A lot of the work Cathi creates is inspired by her sister who fought a long battle with cancer. The key principles taken from the experience that are addressed in her work are:
*Lie is a gift; how we live it is a choice
*Belief in a higher power stronger than ourselves brings peace.
*Joy and thankfulness always trump loss and suffering.
*The healthy and prosperous are not always lucky and the sick are not always the unfortunate.
*The loving soul is a living gift that never dies.
Her work "Spirit Rising" is serene and elegant. It stands 105 inches tall, definitely commanding your attention but not in an obtrusive way, but in an inspirational/aspiring manner. The work is a symbol of what can be in your internal life. "Angel in My Arms" is the personification of love, soothing and intimacy. It really personifies the impact we can have when we comfort another.
A show like this has the potential of making you feel like you have multiple personalities but the two distinct styles compliment the other. They create a synergy and make you ask yourself very important questions about your own life and what you stand for. Go spend some time at Walker Fine Art and do it when you have time to sit and co-exist with the art for a time and take in all the inspiring energy.
