We Still Have a Fish

Many artists have a signature technique, color or symbol.  Over the past year I have seen a lot of Mark Friday's work so I was enthused to see his new show at Zip 37.  When I walked in I was surprised to see something completely different then the monoprints and other print work I've seen in other shows.  This work is metal sculpture and paint and lighting adding a whole new dimension to the work.

The work is a mix of architectural and blast from the past sci-fi.  There is one piece that really looks like a creature or other mechanical menace from a sci-fi movie of a bygone era.  The room was kept dark to accentuate the lighting element of the work.  I had the opportunity to see the work with the lights on and off and the work is equally interesting because you focus on different elements depending on the light.

I was very happy to see a fish in this new medium.  Most of the work I've seen in the print arena for Mark has had a fish in the work.  When I first walked in and saw the new pieces I was disappointed because I like the fish, but Mark didn't disappoint, the piece "Glimmer Fish" certainly fits the bill.

I get very enthused to see artists step out of the space artistically where they have achieved success and attempt something new.  I'll follow-up with this medium and see where Mark takes this work in the future.

keep on fishin'...
