Immersed in a Culture

Yes, I'm still talking about the !st annual Latino Art Show at The Other Side Arts (TOSA).  Like I said there were distinct aspects that need to be addressed that impact the success of the show.  I promise for this show this will be the last article, but take heed that they build upon one another because together all three articles talk about the synergistic energy that takes place when people get involved.

Every work of art has a story to tell.  How much do you know about the Latino Community?  How will you learn about the unique challenges or the beliefs of the culture?  The answer...go see the show.  Much of the work is very personal.  Cal Duran's self-portrait caught my eye right from the start.  I heard that Cal was at the opening so when I found him we had a great conversation about his work, his thoughts about getting more Latino art into the community and his ideas for future work.  His piece was provocative and eye-opening.  The portrait has the mouth sewn closed.  It's a little chilling that in this day and age in our country that many people still feel that they have to be silent.  This painting speaks loud and clear.

To round out the evening there was a performance group that invited the audience deeper into the community.  The music and Flamenco dancing were incredible.  The grace of the dancers, the colorful costumes and the incredible guitar player joined with the art on the walls to create a cohesive experience.  It made you feel welcome in the Latino community.  This night was truly about sharing.  It allows us to understand the uniqueness and the universality of our lives.

Gracias...
Greg
