Know Your Audience
It's amazing how universal some business principles are, like the importance of knowing your audience. In the art world it applies to where you show your work, who you have represent you, the exhibtions you enter and the way you educate your collectors. It will have an impact on how you market, for instance you probably don't want to bring a $4,000 piece of art to an arts and crafts festival.
This hit home last night when I went to a meeting at the Denver Coach Federation and heard a speaker who is supposedly regarded a true motivational speaker and I personall felt he feel short. I don't think he knew the audience because there was little relevance between his talk and the mission of the group.
Don't get me wrong, he was a good story teller but sometimes we need substance. I remember watching an episode of Project Runway (I admit I'm a junkie) and one of the designers was giving this long dissertation about the garment he had created and the judge stopped him and said you can talk all you want, the piece doesn't match the challenge or the story.
Knowing your audience may apply to everything from the size of work you show in a venue, to the price of the work, to how you present in the way of dress. Be prepared, know where you're going, keep your work, how and where you show in alignment with your values, be consistent and most of all be you!
Very Aware...
