Show Care When Reinterpreting an Idea
CORE New Art Space has a show of recent works by Gina Smith Caswell. The series is titled "The Wallpaper Series". The work replicates in paintings what appear to be vintage wallpapers. It's an interesting idea but I believe the work was a bit too literal. I also felt the paintings feel a bit out of focus, now I know they aren't photographs, it's the style of the painting.
I feel it's important to consider what you want to convey to your audience and how best to represent that idea. A few months ago I talked about a show by ceramic artist Tsehai Johnson who reinterpreted wallpaper patterns from the 1860's. There you could see the connection and the artist's interpretations was truly about modernizing what once was.
I felt that the work in Gina's series was very busy and when hanging the show there were too many paintings for the space allowed. I felt like the show would of had a stronger presence if there was more white space giving the eye a place to rest. It's overstimulating the way it hangs.
Lots to consider...will you take it to heart when you plan your next body of work?
Overstimulated...
