Convergence

The art walk on the first Friday of the month brings out lots of interesting people.  As a fiber artist I like to support the opening of new shows at Translations Gallery, www.translationsgallery.com, a gallery specializing in textile art.  When I got there and looked around I was thrilled to see the works of artist I admire.  It was great to see actual pieces of their work instead of samples they may have brought for a workshop.  It gives me a broader perspective about their artistic view and it's easier to see when the piece is in front of you than when you're looking at a slide.

The current show "transFORMations" is a traveling show from SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates).  There is work from 30 artists both national and international.  The work that drew my attention was the art by James Koehler.  James creates amazing woven tapestries.  There are a few pieces of his work and to see the subtlety of color variations is more than impressive.  Its almost as if he created fiber optical illusions.

Fortunately there are lots of fiber artists in the area and it just so happens that bunch decided to show up for this opening.  It was stimulating to stand in the middle of the gallery and discuss techniques of the artists in the show.  It also ignited further discussion about where our personal art work was headed.  Having that kind of kinship with artists in the same medium can be a synergistic experience...it was for me!

Caught up in the excitement...
Greg
