Breaking Out of the Gate!
What is it that wakes us up and one day we realize that we need to show our work? I know too many artists who have basements, attics and garages filled with work waiting for someone to lay eyes on them. There is a tipping point where one day we wake up and realize it's time for the world to see our work.
I went to the opening of a Sharon Duwaik's first solo exhibition. She is exhibiting at The Other Side Arts (TOSA) in Aurora. The gallery is open and bright and she displayed her work with a story in mind and the story isn't finished with this show. In fact, I believe this show is merely the prologue of what's to come.
Sharon did something I think is courageous. She is exhibiting work from her college days...let's just say it's not very recent. The intriguing part of exhibiting a piece from the past is that it gives the audience the opportunity to see your growth. It shows us what has transpired during the gap in time from the original work to now, when you've made the decision to show your work to the world.
I admire Sharon for taking this leap. She tells stories throughout the exhibition and if you get to hear them in person like I did they are that much better.
Kudos,
Greg
