The Naive Artist
Why do some artists believe that all they have to do is create the work and then every gallery in town will want to represent them? Do we really come from such an egocentric place that we can't imagine the art world not bowing down to make us happy? I went to the opening of a new art show and when I arrived it was like a ghost town. I hung out for a while and only saw one group of four people walk in, obviously friends of the artist.
When I spoke to the artist he explained to me that he has been creating the work and he's been shopping it to the galleries. He seemed confused, even dismayed at the fact that the 20-30 galleries he approached didn't want to show his work. Upon further discussion I learned that he hasn't show in any shows, has been in other venues and didn't have any connections in the art community. To me that deserves a "HELLOOOOOO!!!!".
There are so many things wrong with the artists thought process that I don't have enough memory on the computer to go through all of the mishaps, but I can say he didn't even seem to be curious about how to rectify the situation. It's as if he felt that eventually the art world would come around and see things his way. This is what pains me because it's this mentality that I hear about often and the artists whine and moan about not achieving any level of success. Remember, it's going to take some sweat equity on your part before anyone comes knocking and that sweat equity extends beyond the studio.
