METALisms, I Like Shiny Things

On this snowy Friday morning I ventured out to hear Robert "Bob" Ebendorf speak about his journey as a jewelry and metal artist over the past forty years.  He described the "METALisms" exhibit as a "Gourmet visual meal of work" and I'd have to agree.  The diversity of the pieces was magnificent.

Jennifer Garner, Interim Director of the Center for Visual Art explained that the artists invited to participate were asked to submit 1-4 pieces that were signature works representing their career.  I had a chance to wander through the gallery and saw beautiful pieces but there were two artists in particular that caught my eye, my attention and my adoration.

Juan Carlos Caballero-Perez' piece, Ashes to Ashes II (2005), was made with copper, fine silver, enamel, sterling silver felt, stainless steel pins and silver leaf.  It was a gorgeous vessel.  It was elegant and sleek.  My hats off to you Juan, your piece made me begin to consider how I would add metal to my repertoire.

Gretchen Goss had a three piece series Water View I, II & III.  The pieces were comprised of enamel and copper.  If you've seen any of my work you'll know that I'm very attracted to representational water pieces.  Could be the fact that I'm a water sign (Cancer) might have something to do with the attraction.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to view these exhibits putting on my hat as neighborhood artistic voyeur.  The gallery is beautiful, well staffed and a great place to see great art!  Thanks for a wonderful morning and I'll see you at the next exhibit at the Center for Visual Arts.  If you want to join me for the next outing send me an e-mail at greg@gregkatz.com, I'd love the company!

Musingly Yours,
Greg
